Friday, April 7, 2017, citizens around the world will observe World Health Day, an occasion marking the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO, founded in 1948, is dedicated to international health initiatives involving research, monitoring, providing advice, and setting norms and standards. The WHO is “the directing and coordinating authority on international health within the United Nations’ system.” The organization promotes good health, prevention of diseases both communicable (contagious) and non-communicable, universal health coverage, and emergency response. Today, the WHO has offices in more than 150 countries across the globe.
