Bradley Peters11th Grade
Bradley Peters, a junior at Laurel Springs School, was selected by the San Francisco Film Society (SFFS) to be a panelist for the 2013 San Francisco International Film Festival. Founded in 1957, the San Francisco International Film Festival is the longest-running film festival in the Americas. This year, the SFFS made two juror spots available to San Francisco Bay Area high school students in the form of a competition.
Entrants were required to submit a written review of a film they had recently seen. The review was to be no longer then one page in length. Winners were selected based on their ability to strongly and articulately convey their opinions about the film which they reviewed. The SFFS was interested in seeing examples of the students’ ability to clearly express their opinions about film as this is a key skill necessary in being a good panelist/juror.
Bradley was one of two winners and was the only student attending a distance learning school who was selected for the panel. The panel on which Bradley participated viewed approximately 40 film entries in the festival’s Youth (18 and under) category. The thinking behind this was that winning selections would be judged by their peers. Bradley served on the panel with Keith Zwolfer, Youth Education Manager for the SFFS, Joanne Parsont, Director of Education for the SFFS, and a student from a public high school in Berkeley, CA. They viewed short films from 2 minutes to 25 minutes in length, nominating five films for the Youth category’s $1,500 award and selecting which films will be shown during the category’s program at this year’s San Francisco International Film Festival. They judged films on a number of factors including: use of the medium, storytelling ability, unique vision, and other elements.
After a recommendation from the Director of Education for the SFFS, Bradley hopes to work with the Bay Area Video Coalition producing short films about Bay Area non-profit organizations. He was also been invited to attend the San Francisco International Film Festival as a guest of the San Francisco Film Society. The festival takes place April 25 – May 10, 2013.
