It’s no secret that technology continues to be one of the most potent forces in driving the development of modern society, and this proves to be just as true in the world of education. Traditional brick-and-mortar schools are racing to keep pace by integrating innovative technologies into their classrooms, a challenge both financially and from a maintenance perspective. At Laurel Springs School, our mission is to provide students with a world-class academic experience delivered through today’s powerful interactive, online technologies.
Most students come to Laurel Springs already immersed in a digital environment. Our students are largely well-versed in web-based platforms, mobile applications, and social media, and their knowledge of how to navigate new technologies often far exceeds even their parents’.
As they begin their course of study with Laurel Springs, students gain access to the tools that will further allow them to be productive and engaged. This past August we made functional and visual improvements to our Learning Management System, upgrading it to allow more effective communication between students and teachers by utilizing audio, video, and written messaging. In addition, it is the goal of our education team to work closely with students to teach not only course subject matter, but also valuable skills like self-pacing, etiquette, and communication, elements of digital citizenship that are vital to success later in life.
Technology also enjoys the benefit of being able to extend the learning space beyond the four walls of a classroom and can help students enhance their relationships with peers no matter where their geographical location may be. With Laurel Springs’ families representing all 50 states and nearly 100 countries, your child has the opportunity to connect with other students all over the globe. In addition to socialization opportunities like online clubs, real-time iClasses, and virtual field trips, we are pleased to offer full-time students in grades 7-12 access to LSS Connect, a private social network that allows them to interact and develop meaningful friendships through a secure online portal via the web or a mobile app.
As the Director of Information Technology with Laurel Springs, it is a privilege to keep our community connected and set our students up for success by utilizing the latest technologies. I look forward to the school year ahead and continuing to explore new ways to keep Laurel Springs at the forefront of innovation and education.
