If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Jaydan Youngblom is not just part of the Laurel Springs family, but so is his sister, Hannah-Nikyta. The gene to succeed must be strong. Jaydan not only enrolled in online classes because of his sister’s positive experiences, but he also decided to challenge himself by joining the new Minerva Baccalaureate Program through The Academy at Laurel Springs.
Following in Fearless Footsteps
Ever since his sister enrolled in Laurel Springs, Jaydan recognized the benefits of attending an online private school. “I have the structure necessary for me to thrive and make the best time-management decisions. This way, I am able to spend time gaming and doing other extracurricular activities while also accomplishing my schoolwork.” So it’s only natural that when Hannah-Nikyta started taking Minerva courses, Jaydan wasn’t far behind. “At first, I was uncertain about whether I wanted to take part in the program. However, after I understood the benefits of the Minerva Baccalaureate Program, I decided that I definitely wanted to be a part of it.”
Jaydan is now a part of a four-year cohort of motivated Academy students who will follow an engaging high school curriculum from two leaders in education: Laurel Springs and the Minerva Project. At the end of the program, Jaydan will not only receive a diploma from Laurel Springs and Minerva, but also 32 post-secondary credits from Minerva and the rigorous prep needed for college. “This program will enable me to go back to my home country [Germany] without having to take extra courses or another two high school years to be on par with the students there. The classes I will take will help me cultivate my critical thinking skills and be more open-minded.” The Minerva Baccalaureate engages Academy students in the real-world application of knowledge, and allows subject matter to interconnect—this helps students to develop complex critical thinking, advanced problem solving, and strategic decision-making skills.
A World-Class Program from Anywhere in the World
The Minerva Baccalaureate Program is a cohort that starts in grade nine and blends a rigorous education from The Academy at Laurel Springs with the innovative educational offerings from the Minerva Project. Jaydan, along with fellow members of his cohort, benefit from an online, collaborative learning environment, including two live classes each day. “In 9th grade, I will be focusing on learning how to balance my workload and develop a healthy work-play balance.” The flexible Laurel Springs courses will help with this, while the in-class Minerva sessions provide that beneficial balance. Once the program is complete, Jaydan will have experienced what’s necessary to meet the demands of an elite education, opening up a world of possibilities for his future. “I plan on going to a four-year college and studying overseas. I am still exploring my interests, but I think that I will be happy studying at university when it is a subject that I enjoy.”
We’re all invited to follow Jaydan on his journey through this program, as we plan to chronicle his journey on our blog. “I believe it is important for other students to be aware of the wonderful opportunities that [Laurel Springs provides]… I hope that students are able to join me in challenging themselves and helping to make the world a better place by fulfilling our educational duties and making a change with the knowledge that we have gained.”
