Class of 2020 Senior Spotlight: Alexander Burkhart

Laurel Springs Senior, Alexander Burkhart, is on track to building a better future. Through his involvement in a wide range of activities to his multiple scholarship awards, he’s already proved to be a leader in his field and a role model for those he's bound to lead later in life.

A Man of Many Talents

During his years at Laurel Springs, Alexander was no stranger to extracurriculars. In addition to his role in Student Government and inductee of the National Honor Society, Alexander was team captain of his FIRST Robotics Competition Team. Under his exceptional leadership, the team turned their technical skills into multiple victories including: winner of the District Championship, first in the region, and fourth in their division at the World Championship.
Alexander also served as a mentor for Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology (BLAST) at the University of Virginia, worked for General Dynamics, and created his own award-winning autonomous RC car. In his spare time, Alexander also enjoys playing the violin and was first violinist in his community orchestra.
This long list of accolades doesn’t just happen. Many long hours and consistent dedication goes into building such an impressive resume. All the while, getting an education continues to be a priority, and Laurel Springs helps to make that possible. "What makes Laurel Springs so special are the teachers and counselors," Alexander said. "They work around the student's schedule in helping each of us pursue our passion while thriving academically. I am so thankful for my knowledge and experience I have gained while attending Laurel Springs."

The Journey Continues

As Alexander prepares to start his next chapter at Georgia Institute of Technology, majoring in computer science, his winning streak is still going strong. He has recently been selected as a Provost Scholar which, according to the Georgia Tech website, is given to those who "demonstrate extraordinary academic achievement, outstanding leadership skills, and have high potential to contribute inside and outside the classroom..."
Alexander was also awarded the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship in recognition of his hard work, resilience, and commitment to the field of computer science. This scholarship also includes a paid summer internship at Amazon after his freshman year of college. As for what comes after that, Alexander is focused on working in the field of quantitative and computational finance, becoming a revolutionary artificial intelligence scientist. If his extensive list of accomplishments is any indication, the future is sure to be full of innovations led by this bright young mind.
