Computer Science Education Week: The Hour of Code at Laurel Springs

Computers are an invaluable tool, and they make an impact on every industry in the world. But did you know that only about 45% of high schools teach computer science? Learning the art of coding helps develop problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and creativity. If students begin this journey early in their academic careers, they can have a foundation for success for any career path, even outside the realm of computer science. During Computer Science Education Week, students at any level can get a quick, bite-sized peek into what it means to code.

What Is the Hour of Code?

The Hour of Code is a 60-minute primer on computer science basics, designed to remove the intimidating perception of the coding process. It was created to prove that anyone can learn the foundation of technology. Even leaders like President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote their very first lines of code as part of this movement!

Now, it is a global campaign, with support from over 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide, including Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and the College Board.

Does Laurel Springs Participate in the Hour of Code?

Yes! The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. This year, we are holding our event on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Noon EST. Laurel Springs School Creative Computing Club adviser, Mr. Lower, hosts an event that will have 100% of participants coding after one hour, no matter their level.
