Laurel Springs Senior Mary Adegbesan announced as Cameron Impact Scholar Recipient and Coca Cola Scholar Regional Finalist
Student Stories

We couldn’t be prouder to celebrate our very own Laurel Springs student, Mary Adegbesan, Class of 2026! In January, The Bryan Cameron Education Foundation announced the Class of 2026 Cameron Impact Scholars, and LSS senior Mary was chosen for one of the 15 total scholarships. Each award recipient has earned a four-year, merit-based scholarship to cover the full tuition and educational expenses at any U.S. collegiate institution in any academic area of their choosing.
Also in January, Mary was announced as a Regional Finalist in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program! Out of a pool of more than 107,000 applicants, 250 high school seniors were selected based on their academic excellence, leadership, and service demonstrated in school and community involvement. Each Regional Finalist is currently in the running for 150 college scholarships worth $20,000 each.
Mary’s exceptional educational work is no surprise, as she has been making a big impact in her community and with her classmates from a young age. Last year, Mary shared more about her background on our blog, also describing what it was like to start her non profit CTRL Code. Through CTRL Code, Mary has been able to break down barriers that keep students from exploring new technology like coding, and she’s been empowering students from all backgrounds to get involved with opportunities like workshops, mentorship, and free coding education.
“As someone passionate about the intersection of computer science and educational equity, these recognitions feel deeply meaningful because they affirm the work I’ve devoted myself to and the impact I hope to continue expanding, ” Mary shared when asked about what both awards meant to her. “I’m excited to join both communities of changemakers and grow as a leader committed to increasing opportunity through technology.”
Laurel Springs Dean of Counseling, Heidi McClure, who has worked with Mary extensively, shared: “Mary represents everything that is so awesome about Laurel Springs Students – she has simultaneously pursued her commitment to bring coding opportunities to under-resourced communities while also diving headlong into a rigorous course load.”
The Bryan Cameron Education Foundation was established in 2015, and for the past 10 years they have been creating opportunities for the next generation by investing in outstanding young adults who plan to use their college education as a stepping stone toward a lifetime of significant professional and personal contributions.
For more than a quarter of a century, the Coca-Cola Foundation has contributed to the leaders of the next generation. Coke Scholars have worked tirelessly to make their communities better through leadership and action, and past Coke Scholars have worked as C-level executives, nonprofit founders, national, state, and local government officials, and more.
“Laurel Springs School exists to support students like Mary,” says Head of School, Alyssa Tormala. “From the very beginning 35 years ago, our goal has been to provide students with both an excellent education and the flexibility and support they need to follow their dreams and passions. Mary is a beautiful example of the many students who are able to take advantage of the Laurel Springs experience for this purpose.”
We can’t wait to see what incredible things she continues to accomplish throughout her professional career and personal life!
