Ever Expanding: The World Language Program at Laurel Springs School
Student Life
10/14/2025
Kiss World Language course limits goodbye – Laurel Springs School embraces a robust World Language program of six languages with a combination of flexible, self-paced learning and interactive verbal practice.
World Language Courses
High School students who attend Laurel Springs can choose from six World Language offerings:
- Spanish (Levels 1 – 4 plus AP Spanish)
- French (Levels 1 – 4 plus AP French)
- German (Levels 1 – 3)
- Mandarin (Levels 1 – 3)
- ASL (Levels 1 – 3)
- Latin (Levels 1 – 3)
Middle School students can take MS Levels 1 and 2 of any of the above languages. Elementary School students in grades 3-5 can now explore Spanish or Mandarin.
Our asynchronous World Language courses combine the independent practices of reading, writing, listening and speaking to ensure that students are learning all aspects of the language.
Each student is matched with an expert World Language teacher who tracks their progress, provides personalized feedback, and is available by individual appointment to provide guidance, offer extra practice or review key skills, and provide extra resources to help students expand or accelerate their learning.
Opportunities for Connection, Practice and Feedback
But our students don’t have to rely just on their asynchronous coursework to learn World Languages – they can learn and practice with others!
Academy Workshops
Students that are enrolled in The Academy at Laurel Springs (a specialized, higher-touch program for grades 6-12) are able to sign up for weekly workshops in ASL, Mandarin, Spanish, or French. These weekly sessions bring a group of students together with an expert teacher for live, collaborative lessons that focus especially on verbal language practice.
Conversation Cubs & Café
We know one of the best ways to practice a language is through conversation with others! So we offer the Conversation Cubs experience for our Elementary students and the Conversation Café experience for our Middle and High School students. These twice-weekly sessions allow students to chat it up in the language they are learning with other students and an expert teacher.
“I really enjoy Conversation Café because it gives me an opportunity to learn new languages. Because of that, I have grown more interested in French culture, and I’m excited to learn more and more.” –9th grade student
Bonus part of joining Conversation Cubs or Café? Some of our teachers add extra activities for our students. Our Mandarin learners, for example, get a chance to try written calligraphy while chatting with Mrs. Wang!
Honor Societies
Laurel Springs is proud to host official Honors Societies in Spanish, French and Latin! These groups induct new members each fall. Students who actively participate and complete all requirements can earn honor cords at graduation.
Language Immersion Field Trips
Laurel Springs is trying something new this year: Language Immersion Field Trips! Students can register to visit Quebec to immerse in French or Puerto Rico to immerse in Spanish. Accompanied by expert faculty, students plus a family member will learn about the culture, history, and geography of a people while getting hands-on language practice.
