English 4
Students will learn concepts by theme, engaging in academic reading and writing that they will encounter throughout their continued educational experiences, workforce training, and life in a technological society.
Through a variety of readings, from contemporary essays to 16th-century poetry, students will explore the literary and rhetorical styles of an assortment of writers. The Norton Reader will guide students through works that explore a variety of themes from home and tradition to education and public service, touching on rhetorical modes such as compare and contrast and cause and effect.
Students will use the readings as a guide to their own writing, constructing personal narratives, rhetorical analysis, arguments, expository essays, and academic research. Through revisions and edits, students will experience the stages of the writing process by integrating writing and grammatical support to develop effective communication, voice, and style.
Students will gain experience researching, evaluating, and synthesizing sources as they draft and refine their argumentative research skills. Including both creative and academic writing, the course offers students an opportunity to express themselves clearly and effectively, navigating different rhetorical modes and audiences.
*The Honors level of the course provides additional challenging assignments aimed at preparing college-bound students for advanced work in the study of literature and language arts, including close-reading exercises and thought-provoking journal activities.
