Counter to what many may believe, the college application process is anything but a sprint. It’s a marathon where each mile is a new opportunity to put your best foot forward and improve your stride. As a student, navigating this can be incredibly daunting – particularly if top-tier institutions are on your radar. However, with the right guidance, you can nail your applications while also making meaningful connections along the way; and the College Counselors at Laurel Springs are here to help you do just that.
Drawing from years of experience (30 for some!) and with a deep understanding of the ever-evolving admissions landscape, our Laurel Springs Counseling Department provided their expert advice and tips in the article below so you feel equipped to not only navigate the complexities of the application process but also shine in a manner that truly embodies your strengths, passions, and aspirations. Whether you’re just starting your high school journey or are gearing up for that final application push, read on to discover how to make the most of each year in your high school career.
How to Succeed in the College Admissions Process: A Year-by-Year Approach
First things first, let it be known that all Laurel Springs counselors agreed on one thing specifically: Your freshman year is where it all begins.
Freshman Year: Your GPA starts on the first day of your high school classes. One Laurel Springs counselor emphasized the importance of shining academically from the get-go. If you’re struggling, access resources like Tutor.com through your LSS student portal, and start seeking support from your teachers and counselors early on.
It’s also important to get involved in clubs that resonate with your interests, and aim for leadership roles. “Don’t just join clubs to say you belong,” they advised. Instead, demonstrate a sincere desire to learn; ask meaningful, relevant questions; and show initiative. One counselor added that “students should get deeply involved in activities that genuinely interest them, because this depth can showcase their interest and passion, which makes them stand out in their applications in the future.”
Sophomore Year: Continue to aim for the highest grades possible. Because you’re in the swing of things at this point, it’s the perfect time to question whether or not more advanced courses suit you and your strengths. If you excel in English, why not challenge yourself with an Honors or AP course? It’s not too early to start considering how you can uplevel your high school experience academically.
Another counselor stressed the importance of forging genuine connections with teachers during this time. “Engaging authentically with teachers not only fosters better learning but also aids in getting great recommendation letters down the road.”
Oh, and don’t forget to keep your involvement consistent. Keep striving for leadership roles!
Junior Year: This is a very critical year! Colleges want to see passion and progression in subjects related to your future career. This is also the perfect time for college visits (virtual or in person). Try to truly understand the campus culture and find out what suits you. Remember, “you’re buying a degree, not a university,” said another counselor, so focus on your intended major or career ambitions rather than peripheral features. “Do your homework. Colleges and universities want to know that you did your research and can tie it to your intended major or career path.”
Furthermore, continue to build on those relationships with teachers, as the counseling department previously advised, since you’ll soon (well, very soon!) be looking to them for recommendation letters.
Senior Year: Woohoo! It’s application time! The Laurel Springs counseling department recommends starting on your common application during the summer leading into senior year. One counselor emphasized meticulousness in this process: “Every detail counts when it comes to your essay, from grammar and word count to the quality of the content.” She also encouraged proactive communication with admissions offices, ensuring you present the most polished application possible. The essay is a window into who you are, so be sure it genuinely reflects your character. “Stick to the prompt, avoid tangents, and most importantly, it should be in your words,” the counselors advised.
When seeking recommendation letters, connect with your teachers and provide them with a crisp resume to help them craft meaningful letters.
Final Thoughts
At the heart of Laurel Springs’ approach to college readiness are unique grade-level seminar courses, facilitated by our seasoned college counselors. Remember, the entire process is developmental; each year builds upon the last. So, be proactive – no matter your grade level – stay engaged, and don’t hesitate to fully immerse yourself in your learning environments. It only serves you in the future!
