To stand out in college admissions, a student’s story must make an impression among thousands of equally qualified applicants. By building a real-world portfolio centered on sustained involvement and growing depth over time, a student can demonstrate intellectual rigor, curiosity, leadership, resilience, and purpose all at once. Discover how targeted mentorship can help students pursue their passions while standing out authentically in the admissions process.
Discover and Develop Core Strengths
Online learning provides students the flexibility and opportunity to explore interests, foster inquiry, and develop independence. Academic partner Pericles Academy aligns with Laurel Springs School’s core values, and through 1:1 mentorship, helps students turn unique passions into real-world projects that build a standout college portfolio.
Pericles founder Brijesh Aggarwal shares, “Passion discovery is at the center of how we approach every student at Pericles. When a student joins, we assign them a team of mentors across different fields, universities, and countries. It introduces students to topics they have never encountered.”
Building a Cohesive Profile Through 1:1 Mentorship and Online Academic Counseling
Once students uncover individual strengths and niche interests, Pericles mentors and Laurel Springs counselors help students cultivate a cohesive academic profile.
Laurel Springs academic counselors help students:
- Earn credit for exploring personal interests through Independent Study or Dual Enrollment courses.
- Navigate course selection to establish a rigorous and compliant transcript with AP®, Honors, and NCAA-approved courses aligned with a student’s core focus area.
Pericles Academy mentors help students:
- Write targeted essays through 1:1 coaching from mentors who attend or graduated from target universities.
- Develop original capstone projects through mentorship with active PhD researchers in a student’s field of study.
Middle and Upper School Portfolio Roadmap: From Exploration to Execution
An impactful college portfolio is built intentionally over time, starting in middle school. Mentors at Pericles Academy emphasize that through 1:1 guidance, students transition from passive consumers to active creators.
Grades 7 and 8: Low-Pressure Exploration and Curiosity
As Brijesh notes, these early years are designed for low-pressure trial and error.
“These two years should not be about impressing anyone. This is the window where a student can learn about different topics, try something, discover they dislike it, explore further, and repeat.”
To foster curiosity, he suggests:
- Subscribe to publications that broaden awareness across science, world news, and history.
- Join interest-based clubs to build collaborative skills and explore new passions without academic pressure.
Grades 9 and 10: Building Tangible Academic Depth
As students enter Upper School, the focus shifts from general discovery to building visible depth.
“Now the transcript starts counting, and exploring should turn into something tangible.”
To build academic focus, Pericles recommends that students:
- Prioritize targeted rigor by asking, “Could a stranger look at your transcript and guess what you care about?” Taking a demanding, relevant class shows more academic purpose than playing it safe to protect a GPA.
- Commit to a sustained project over time rather than scattering efforts across brief activities. “A student who spends two years on one thing ends up with something tangible to show,” Brijesh explains. “A student who spends two years on five things ends up with a list.”
Grades 11 and 12: External Validation and College Applications
These are the years when a student should be getting external validation for their work. Whether pursuing research through Laurel Springs’ AP Capstone Diploma™ Program or designing an Independent Study, aim to publish in strong journals, present at conferences, or get a project adopted.
“The difference between ‘I built a water quality sensor’ and ‘I built a water quality sensor that four schools now use’ is the kind of difference selective colleges are looking for,” Brijesh explains.
Junior Year
- Reach out to university labs and professors in a field of interest for opportunities to collaborate, present, or publish.
- Complete standardized tests (SAT® or ACT®), ideally by the middle of junior year.
Summer/Early Senior Year
- Finalize school visits and track financial aid deadlines, which often fall earlier than general admissions dates.
- Request letters of recommendation from teachers or counselors, providing a short note detailing projects in progress, key accomplishments, and the personal “why” behind the work.
Building an Authentic Portfolio With Purpose
Developing an impactful portfolio is a deliberate multi-year journey, transforming early curiosity into visible academic depth and real-world achievements. By combining Laurel Springs’ self-paced, college-prep education with 1:1 mentorship from Pericles Academy, students build an authentic, purpose-driven portfolio for top-tier colleges.
