Debunked! The Midyear Switch IS Possible

Parents, if you’re under the impression your child can only start a new school in fall and can’t switch schools midyear, you’re mistaken. School choice is a reality any time of year, and your child can switch schools anytime.
Four reasons families change schools
If you come to the conclusion your child’s school isn’t the right fit after the fall semester, it’s okay. Below are just a few reasons why you may consider changing schools.
Reason 1. Life change
Moving or traveling is a common reason why children transfer schools. However, a lifestyle change doesn’t have to mean packing up and moving elsewhere. If your child has a busy schedule with their personal pursuits outside of the classroom like sports, entrepreneurship, or the arts, then switching to a flexible school can help your child manage their time wisely.
Reason 2. Bullying
Bullying and other social issues in school cause a disrupted education experience for kids. If your child is experiencing harassment or feeling excluded in school, finding a safe, friendly environment for them to thrive socially will improve their overall wellbeing and performance in school.
Reason 3. Academics
Your child’s current school may offer a great curriculum, but different academic systems can play into different strengths–especially if your student is a driven individual. If your child is feeling bored or unchallenged in their academics, then finding a new school with a stimulating and engaging curriculum can make going to school exciting again. On the other hand, if your child is struggling in the traditional classroom, finding a school that meets their learning style and overall needs will give them the opportunity to thrive academically. It’s all about finding the right match, and never settling for less.
Reason 4. Support
K-12 students rely on their teachers and counselors to teach and guide them on their journey to graduation. If your child isn’t receiving the individualized attention they require, it may be time to make the switch to a school that supports their needs.
How to switch in the middle of the school year
The process of switching midyear depends on your child’s new school’s enrollment policies. For specifics, please contact the specific school’s administration. For a general overview, keep reading.
Step 1. Apply to your child’s new school
Fill out your child’s application to their new school. This application will typically ask for your student’s information including name, address, grade level, and reason for transfer or enrollment. Public school open enrollment varies from state to state, and some states require charter schools to give preference to students based on proximity. Private school enrollments vary from school to school.
Step 2. Make your current school aware
Once you’ve decided to switch schools, make your child’s school aware your child will be transferring or leaving. Your child’s school will have you fill out paperwork and should supply you with the appropriate materials like transcripts or other school documentation you need.
Step 3. Get ready for your child’s start date
Your child’s start date will be supplied by their new school. Before you celebrate their first day, email their teachers and counselors to discuss how to ease your child’s transition. Be aware, if your child’s new school does not offer open enrollments, it may take a few weeks for them to start.
