Ways Students Can Work Toward Early Graduation

The goal is a deliberate, well-sequenced plan, not a compressed version of high school. Laurel Springs students pursuing early graduation commonly combine several of the following:

• A fuller course load. Within their school counselor’s guidance, students may carry more credits per enrollment period, provided performance remains strong.
• A flexible, asynchronous schedule. Coursework is available at any hour, so students can devote concentrated time to their studies without waiting for a class period or a semester to end.
• Transferring previously earned credit. Accredited coursework from a prior school, once accepted through transcript review, counts toward the graduation requirement.
• Summer coursework. Our online summer program allows students to complete a semester course in four to six weeks or a full-year course in eight to twelve weeks, with up to two credits per summer term. Sessions begin nearly every week from late April through July.
• Strategic course planning. Counselors sequence required courses so that prerequisites are completed early and no requirement becomes a late bottleneck.
• Individual courses. Students enrolled elsewhere may take individual courses to address specific remaining requirements, subject to their current school’s policies.

Students also have 24/7 access to on-demand tutoring in every subject through our partnership with Tutor.com, in addition to instructional support from their teachers.

How Fast Can You Graduate High School?

There is no single answer, and we do not promise a graduation date before reviewing a student’s record. The timeline is determined by:

• Existing credits. A student transferring with substantial accepted high school credits has fewer requirements remaining.
• Remaining required courses. All 23.5 credits must be completed, including specific credits in English, mathematics, science, social studies, world language, fine art, physical education, and health.
• Course load. Laurel Springs high school students typically enroll in 5 to 7 credits per 10-month enrollment. Full-time students enrolled for 10 months must carry a minimum of 4 credits, including at least 3 core credits.
• Transfer-credit eligibility. Only credits accepted through transcript review count toward the diploma.
• Student pace. Coursework is mastery-based, so students advance to the next topic after demonstrating command of the material rather than being held to a daily schedule. Accelerated students may also choose to complete a semester course more quickly, as long as they actively work the course for at least 10 weeks.
• Sequencing and prerequisites. Some courses, such as Algebra 2 or the second year of a world language, cannot begin until a prerequisite is complete.
• Laurel Springs graduation requirements. These include a 0.5-credit, grade-level Seminar course for each year of high school.

Is Graduating High School Early a Good Idea?

For some students, yes. For others, accelerating would cost more than it gains. Our counselors approach this question as academic advisors, and we encourage families to do the same.

Early graduation may be appropriate for students who:

• Are academically ready for an accelerated workload
• Have a clear plan for the time after graduation
• Want to begin college earlier
• Are pursuing intensive training in athletics or the arts
• Have a professional opportunity or wish to enter the workforce with an earlier start
• Need a school schedule that better fits their circumstances
• Are highly motivated and capable of managing their time independently

It may be less appropriate when accelerating would compromise:

• Academic performance and grades
• The rigor of the student’s course selection
• Preparation for college
• Meaningful extracurricular involvement
• Social development and connection with peers
• The student’s overall well-being

Does Graduating Early Look Bad to Colleges?

Graduating early does not inherently make a student a weaker applicant. Admissions offices evaluate the substance of a student’s record, and an accelerated timeline is one part of that record. Colleges may consider:

• The academic rigor of the courses completed
• Grades and consistency of performance
• Completion of the coursework each college requires for admission
• AP®, Honors, or university-level coursework
• Extracurricular involvement and depth of commitment
• Essays and recommendations
• The student’s overall readiness for college-level study

Where an accelerated plan can weaken an application is when speed displaces substance: less advanced coursework, a thinner record of activities, or missing admissions prerequisites. Some institutions also ask applicants to explain a compressed high school timeline, so students should be prepared to describe their reasons and their plan clearly. For these reasons, a student’s college goals should be built into the graduation plan from the start, rather than treating the graduation date as the only objective.

Early Graduation & College Planning

Our College Counselors provide high-touch, 1:1 guidance and hold membership with the National Association for College Admission Counseling. For a student graduating early, that guidance covers:

• Course selection. Ensuring the transcript reflects the rigor expected by the student’s target colleges, not simply the minimum required for the diploma.
• AP coursework. Laurel Springs offers more than 24 Advanced Placement (AP®) courses along with a full slate of Honors courses, which can satisfy diploma requirements while strengthening a college application.
• University-level coursework. Through dual enrollment partnerships, eligible students complete university-level coursework while still in high school. Eligibility requires a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher and specific prerequisite coursework.
• Application timing. Aligning the graduation date with application deadlines, financial aid considerations, and the college calendar.
• SAT/ACT or other required testing. Planning test dates, where applicable, so scores are available when applications are due.
• Extracurricular planning. Preserving the activities and commitments that give an application depth.

For students who want an accelerated plan with more structured collaboration, The Academy at Laurel Springs is a specialized, hybrid program for grades 6 through 12, built on the same accredited Laurel Springs foundation. It shares the same asynchronous, self-paced curriculum and graduation requirements, then adds weekly live Workshops, a research-focused Symposium course, and an Academy Counselor beginning in grade 6. Academy students also have earlier access to university-level coursework: two Dual Enrollment courses per term beginning in grade 9, compared with one per term for full-time students in grades 11 and 12.

2. What graduation requirements remain?
3. Why do you want to graduate early?
4. What do you plan to do after graduation?
5. Are you prepared for an accelerated academic schedule?
6. How will accelerating affect your college plans?
7. Have you discussed the plan with an academic counselor?
